The Project

Langley Events Centre is a large sports and community multiplex with an arena, gymnasiums, field house, fitness and gymnastics spaces, walking track, meeting and banquet areas, community space and outdoor fields.

The combination of broad low-slope roofs and a large curved barrel roof created different waterproofing conditions within one fast-track design-build complex.

Roofing Delivery

We installed a Constop vapour barrier, 5.34 inches of Type I EPS insulation rated R-20, and a 60-mil EPDM membrane across the principal roof areas.

On the barrel-roof areas, we installed a self-adhered vapour barrier, 3.3 inches of R-20 polyiso insulation, and mechanically fastened 60-mil grey high-strength TPO.

Why EPDM and TPO Fit a Large Multiplex

Large arena buildings often combine broad low-slope fields with curved or geometrically distinct sections. EPDM's flexibility and large sheets can reduce field seams across expansive suitable roof areas while accommodating normal building movement when the assembly is correctly designed.

Mechanically fastened TPO can adapt to curved geometry while providing heat-welded seams. Its attachment pattern can be engineered for the deck and wind-uplift requirements where roof shape differs from adjacent areas.

The two systems complement one another across the multiplex: EPDM covers the expansive principal roof fields, while mechanically fastened TPO follows the distinct curved barrel-roof geometry with heat-welded seams.

Frequently Asked Questions

What roofing systems did Raven install at Langley Events Centre?

We installed 60-mil EPDM over the principal roof areas and mechanically fastened 60-mil grey TPO over the curved barrel-roof areas.

Why does this project use two membrane systems?

The building combines expansive principal roof fields with distinct curved barrel-roof areas. EPDM is well suited to broad low-slope areas, while mechanically fastened TPO follows the curved geometry and provides heat-welded seams.
